Thread Storage

A common post in the longarm quilting forums is on 'how do you store your threads'.  So I thought I would share some pictures of my thread storage system.  These are IKEA cabinets called ALEX and they work wonderful for threads and pantographs.  They are on casters and can fit right under my machine. Tim made the plywood dividers with the notches for each cone so the thread would not roll around the drawers.  Very smart!
I just bought my second one this summer so plan a large thread order soon to fill it up.
I don't like leaving my threads on shelves or in the open as the dust collects on the spools very quickly in my shack.  I even have an air cleaner in there to collect the batting dust in the air but the dust bunnies still multiply!

  1. Thanks for sharing, Kathy. Love the dividers. Tim did an excellent job for you :) Thank you also for the name and brand of the drawers. You are appreciated :)

  2. I love your thread cabinets. I always look forward to your hints, ideas and photos on your blog. Yes, nice hubby! Mine is busy painting the bathroom. We can never have enough thread; it seems when it comes to a certain project I have every colour, but the right one. Cyn

  3. I was searching the internet for thread storage ideas. I have a basket that holds everything. It looks so festive, but is so disorganized and everything gets tangled. Not pretty. Yours is the best solution I have found. Thanks.

  5. I've been looking at the Alex drawer systems for my longarm in the garage and have been lamenting about the spool storage not working since the depths are so shallow! What a great solution for them! You just made my decision! Thanks for sharing!!!

  6. Definitely using this idea! I have blinds from the ReStore to use as dividers and added some inexpensive Vinyl 'covers' in each drawer.

  7. Great idea. Looking for a way to store my king spools embroidery thread. How deep are the drawers or I guess I should say how high are the drawers. I was wondering if my spools would stand up in there.

    1. The top three drawers are 2 1/2" deep and the bottom three drawers are 3 1/2" deep
